Labor was appointed at the creation, but so was its remuneration (“In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread,” GENESIS 3:19). Labor and sustenance go together. The right to enjoy the fruits of his work is one of mankind’s earliest rights, stretching all the way back to the dawn of time. It is a God-given due.
If we deny a person his just wages, we deny him the freedom to live. We take his life, if we take that which sustains life. Toil should not go unrewarded! Even the working animal is entitled to eat.
“You take my house, when you do take the prop
That doth sustain my house; you take my life,
When you do take the means whereby I live,”
William Shakespeare (1564-1616), English playwright, poet and actor
“You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” DEUTERONOMY 25:4 (cf. 1 CORINTHIANS 9:9,10)
